iPhone Tips and Tricks

Posted in Miscellaneous on December 28th, 2009 by Brett

When reading an email, text or web page and you want to get
back to the top, touch any where on the status bar (look for
the “time”, that’s the status bar) and it will take you to
the beginning.

If you are in a meeting, and your iPhone rings (or vibrates)
you can silent it immediately without sending it to voicemail
immediately. Just press on the “volume” keys. If you want
to send it to voicemail immediately, press the sleep/wake
button on the top of your iPhone.

To “Hard Reboot” your iPhone, hold the “Home” button and
the Sleep/Wake button together for 10 seconds. You can
ignore the “slide to turn off” message. This does not cause
any loss of programs or data.

Does you iPhone sometimes show no signal, when you know
you should have a signal? Instead of rebooting, try turning
“Airplane” mode off and on. Go to the “Settings” icon and
slide Airplane on “On” then “Off”.

Force bad Apps to quit. Hold the “Sleep/Wake” button and
“Home” button simultaneously until you see “slide to turn off”.
Release both buttons, then hold the “Home” button down for
about 6 seconds. This will release the App and return to your
Home screen. (If you have an iPhone that hasn’t been
upgrade to OS3.0, just hold the “Home” button down for
6 seconds. This will release the App and return you to
your Home screen.

Have you messed up your iPhone and can’t get back to where
it was before you messed it up? You can reset your iPhone
back to it’s last backup (the last time you did a “sync”.
Connect your iPhone to your computer with the USB cable.
When iTunes starts, click the iPhone icon and Restore.

When you want to browse the web in Safari, you don’t
have to type in the entire web address. If you are going
to a .com domain. Example: http://www.bretthatch.com
Just type in bretthatch (it understand the
stuff before and after). Try it!

When on a website, if you want to see where a link will
take you, just hold you finger down on the link. A menu
will appear that tells you the full link, with additional options.

In Safari, if there is a picture on a website you like, you can
save it to your camera roll. Hold you finger on the image for
about 3 seconds. An option will show up. Choose “Save Image”
and it will be in your camera roll.

If you are browsing the web, and you come across a page t
hat you just have to tell someone about, click on the + at the
bottom of the page and email it to them.

When sending an email, when you type the address, instead
of typing .com, just hold the . (period) down and choose the
domain type ending.

Many keys on the keyboard have “extra” characters.
Hold down a key and find out what else it does.
Note: not every key has other features. Experiment!

To enter punctuation or numbers easily, hold your finger on
the 123 key, then slide to the number or punctuation you want
and release. The keyboard will go back to the qwerty keyboard.

Did you make a mistake typing, then need to get the cursor
back to your mistake to fix? Instead of backspacing (and un-doing
all the correct stuff), hold your finger down on the typed letters.
A “magnifying” glass will appear. Slide your finger to where
you want the cursor to be and release. Now, fix your error.

Take a screen shot of your iPhone. Hold the “home” and the
“sleep/wake” (the top button) for two seconds. Release and
you will hear the camera sound. The picture is in your
cameral roll.

In Maps, typing in the 3 letter airport code (ex: pdx) will
take you directly to the map of the airport.

Google Chrome is out for the Mac…

Posted in Mac on December 12th, 2009 by Brett

Google Chrome web browser is out for the Mac (in beta).  It’s a fast browser.
You can download it here: http://www.google.com/chrome?platform=mac&hl=en

I’ve had it for a couple weeks now and I like it.  It doesn’t work with 1Password,
so I haven’t made it my default….yet.

Does your new computer have Windows 7?

Posted in Windows on December 8th, 2009 by Brett

Do you have problems running “older” software in Windows 7? Microsoft has a new
program that lets you run Windows XP as a “virtual machine” from within Windows 7
(you don’t need a Windows XP disk).  See the link below to download it.  You can also
download a program to check if your computer has the hardware (requires processors
capable of hardware-assisted virtualization) to run Windows Virtual PC.

Got questions?  I can answer them!

My MacBook Pro runs Apple OS X Snow Leopard (Operating System)  with iWork
and Mac Office 2008.

I have VMWare Fusion 3.0 (a virtual machine) running Windows Vista with Office 2007
and Linux Ubuntu running Sun Open Office

I have Parallels 5.0 (a virtual machine) running Windows XP with Office 2003 and
Windows 7 (64 bit) with Office 2007

Now THAT’S A COMPUTER!

Create a ringtone for you iPhone from iTunes

Posted in Mac on November 26th, 2009 by Brett

Do you want a ringtone on your iPhone, but don’t want to pay iTunes for creating it?
If you have a Mac, and have Garage Band 09, you can do it for free!  Here’s how:

Open Garage Band

Choose “iPhone Ringtone”

You can select the “Example Ringtone”

Click “Choose”

Save this, ie, give it a name in “Save As” example: thenameofthesong.band

I like saving mine to my Desktop

Don’t change anything else.

Click on “Create”

Click on the blue “Pastel Slide Medium” and hit your “delete” button on the keyboard

In the bottom right corner of Garage Band, there are 3 little icons, an “eye”, a “i” and
a music note. Click on the music note

This should open the music in your iTunes library.

Choose the song you want to create a ringtone from and drag it to Garage Band and let go.

The orange bar is the song.  The yellow bar is the portion of the song the ringtone will be
created from.  You can click on the yellow bar and move it to any portion of the song you
want to create the ringtone.  You can grab the “end’ of the yellow bar and make the ringtone
longer or shorter.  (You can not create/save a ringtone longer than 40 seconds.)

Once you get the ringtone to the right size, click on “Share” at the top of Garage Band,
then “Send Ringtone to iTunes”

That’s it!  It should be in your iTunes under Ringtones.
Sync your iPhone and you have a new ringtone!

Calibrate your Mac battery

Posted in Mac on November 12th, 2009 by Brett

I got this directly off Apple’s website.

Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time.

You can calibrate your iBook, PowerBook, MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro
computer’s lithium ion battery for best performance.

The battery calibration for the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) and any
model of MacBook or MacBook Pro has been updated because of a new battery
released with this computer. With these computers, follow these steps to calibrate your battery:

  1. Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook’s battery until the
light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen
meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.
  2. Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours.
You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
  3. Disconnect the power adapter while the computer still on and start running the
computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time.
When your battery gets low, the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen.
  4. At this point, save your work. Continue to use your computer; when the battery
gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep.
  5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.
  6. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the
    battery is fully charged again.

Tip: When the battery reaches “empty”, the computer is forced into sleep mode.
The battery actually keeps back a reserve beyond “empty”, to maintain the
computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted,
the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, with the safe sleep function
introduced in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) computers,
the computer’s memory contents have been saved to the hard drive.
When power is restored, the computer returns itself to its pre-sleep state using
the safe sleep image on the hard drive.

Windows 7 comes out Thursday, October 22nd. Should you upgrade?

Posted in Windows on October 20th, 2009 by Brett

The good thing about Windows 7 is that it has been tested like no other
Windows OS. The beta version has been out for quite some time
(I even had it on my Mac).

But, should you upgrade? Here are some things to think about before you
go out and purchase it.

How old is your computer? If your computer is over 2 years old, I would not upgrade.

How much RAM do you have? If you don’t have at least 2 GB of RAM,
I would not upgrade. I would prefer to see your computer have at least 3-4 GB of RAM.

Are you running XP or Vista? If you are running Vista, and your computer
meets the other 2 criteria above, go ahead and upgrade! (Keep reading…there’s more!)
If you are running XP, I would think twice. Even if your computer meets the other
2 criteria (and I doubt it does if you are running XP), this is a MAJOR upgrade to XP.

So you’ve made the decision to upgrade. There is more you need to do before you
stick that dvd in the drive (yep, the Windows 7 comes on a DVD). So…
Make sure your computer has a DVD drive. It doesn’t have to be read/writable,
but it does have to be able to run DVD’s. 95% of computer’s have a dvd drive.

Make sure you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

Backup, Backup, Backup, then Backup again. I can’t stress this enough.
If something goes terribly wrong ( and it can) you better have a backup!

Last point…upgrading to Windows 7 will not make you more money!
(that’s always one of my criteria to upgrading software or hardware…) so be patient.
Maybe wait a few weeks to see how everyone else (who didn’t read this blog)
are fairing with the upgrade. I don’t think there is going to be major problems,
but why take the risk? Microsoft is not know for flawless upgrades!
