VMware Fusion or Parallels? - You have a Mac, but need to run Windows because you have certain programs you have to use, but
they're Windows based. You can still run them on your Mac. You just need to
purchase "Virtual Machine" software.
Virtual Machines allow you to run Windows on a Mac. Which
one you choose doesn't matter. They both work basically the same.
I prefer Fusion. But...I have Fusion on my Mac running
Windows Vista and...I have Parallels running Windows XP. Crossover (Standard) -
Another Virtual Machine, but you don't have to load Windows! Run
Internet Explorer 7, MS Office right from your MAC, without having
to boot into Windows. This program is real buggy, so if you're not willing
to deal with "issues", ie, it works like Windows, not like a Mac :), then don't
use it. I have it...never use it! Clean your MacBook or
MacBook Pro screen - Apple says to use a lint
free cloth. I have no idea what that is, so I use a soft
cotton towel. Moisten one end with luke warm water.
Wipe your screen down, then dry it with the other end. It
works perfect on my MacBook!
Mac Firewall
- The firewall on your Mac is turned off. It comes
defaulted that way. Click on "System Preferences".
Click on "Security". Click on the tab "Firewall".
Choose "Set access for specific services and applications".
Then "Lock" your choice so it can't be changed.
Your Mac firewall will now block all "incoming" requests from the
web. Should you open a program that needs information from
the web, you will see a windows like this:

Since you opened the program (in the above instance, I opened MS Word),
allow it. If this window pops up, and you don't know what it
is, deny it.
Finding open programs on your
Mac
- If you
come from a Windows environment like me, it can be frustrating trying
to find an open application (when you have multiple applications
opened) on your Mac. Hold the "command" key down and tap the
"tab" key. This allows you to "scroll" through the open
applications on your Mac. Let go of the tab and command
buttons and that program comes to the front.
Minimize or Hide all
applications at once
It can be frustrating when you have a bunch of applications opened, and
you want to get to your desktop. There are 2 ways to get to
your desktop quickly.
-
Use "Expose". Open
"System Preferences", Open "Expose & Spaces", Click on
"Expose", at "Application windows", change it to "F6". Now,
when you want to get to your desktop, hit the F6 key. To
bring all the applications back, hit the F6 key again.
-
Use "Show Desktop".
It's a "free" program that minimizes all your applications at
once. Click
here to download it.
